Horncliffe Horncliffe William Brown, (Publican) On sheet A small irregularly built village,
Horncliffe William Embleton 6.2 situated on the east side of the "Tweed"
Horncliffe Ralph Cleghorn about 4 1/2 miles from Berwick, and three
from Norham; the principal part of the
houses are old and of an inferior
description, they all having small
gardens attached; there are in it
a Public House, Post Office, a Grocer’s
Shop, a Presbyterian Chapel, and
Manse & School. The greater part of it is small
Freeholds and occupied by the proprietors
the remainder belongs to William
Mather Esq. Newcastle-on-Tyne.
It is said to have derived the
name from having been, at a remote
period, inhabited by Horners, i.e.
workers in Horn, and it being situated
on a cliff, was called (the) Horners’ Cliff
now "Horncliffe".
Fisher’s Arms Fisher’s Arms William Brown, (Publican) On sheet A good house, two stories high,
(PH) (PH) William Embleton 6.2 having an Ale & Spirit License, and
Ralph Cleghorn having a good garden attached.
It is in the northeast end of Horncliffe
Village & occupied by Mr Wm Brown.
