County of the Borough } After the battle of Hastings, Edward
and Town of } Continued & Morcar (Earl of Mercia & his brother)
Berwick upon Tweed } raised a large Army in the North
to resist the Conqueror. The Berwickers
espoused the cause of the former,
& having been defeated with great
slaughter, the town suffered
severely. It was visited by Wms Troops in 1070, who devastated the whole country
from York to Haddington. In 1072 the Scottish monarch took Berwick
by assault, overan the Country as far as the Tyne, and returned homewards
laden with spoil and many captives – William the Lion invaded
England in consequence of the English having taken his inheritance from him
(of ie. Northumberland) – But "Bohun" the Constable of England being dispatched
to repel him William retired into his own Kingdom. In revenge
"Bohun" crossed the Tweed, burnt Berwick and laid waste the adjoining
Country.
The above mentioned William the Lion being taken
prisoner at the Siege of Alnwick Castle, was restored to liberty
on condition that he delivered up to the King of England the
Castles of Roxburgh, Jedburgh, Berwick & Maiden Castle
