Berwick upon Tweed } The inhabitants of Berwick
up to the period when their
Roman allies left them were the ancient Britons. On the completion
of the great wall by Severus, the inhabitants of Aberwicke were in a
manner excluded from holding any beneficial intercourse with their
more refined neighbours south of that Rampart, and given over
to the rude & savage barbarity of the Caledonians, the Picts, & the Scots.
A new invader now presented himself under the pretence of
guarding the Britons from the Pi[c]ts & Scots – namely the Saxon –
the Saxons became masters of the Counties of Berwick & East
Lothian & strengthened the fortifications of Berwick very much.
Berwick still remained in the hands of the Saxons, & in connection
with its history, the historian "Boethius" relates the following –
"Donald, King of Scotland, brother to and successor to Kenneth II.,
the conqueror of the Picts, after a blodody battle on the banks
of the Jed, in which he defeated Osbert, King of Northumberland
