Camp (remains of) Mr William Short On Sheet A The remains of a small camp Hill
Mr Robert Brown 19.12 visible here, Supposed to have been a post
observation in connection with the large
camp called "The Kettles"
Belongs to Doddington Parish
(Detd)
The Wishing Well The Wishing Well Mr William Short On Sheet A small pure spring issueing from the
or Pin Well Mr Geo. Henderson 19.12 rocks a little S.E. Of the Kettles. It is
Mr Robert Brown visited by Wooler people in Summer, and
the custom is to bend a common pin
head & point together and drop it into
the well, at the same time wishing, good
or evil, for friends or enemies. The above
custom would seem to indicate that this
well was formerly a haunt of the fairies,
but is now only a vague tradition.
There is (said to be) a fairy ring inside
the "The Kettles" Camp, marked by a difference
in the colour of the grass, but I think it is
only a fancy, at least I could not find it.
