Roman Station a Hypocaust, and a vault quite perfect.
Dr. Bruce mentions in his History of the
"Roman Wall" that the Hypocaust w[as]
used for heating the "Station" also that one
of the roms above it was occupied as a court
Room or place where the principal
business was transacted, in this part of
the building (the Hypocaust) many stones
of a redish colour have been found
which are supposed to have been burnt.
The vault is quite is quite perfect
it is about 14 links Square and 61/2
feet high, with an arched roof.
the roof being much below the surface
or floor of the Station, the flight of
stairs by which access is gained are also perfect
with some exceptions, some of the steps
being a little worn, they being of a softer
description of stone than that of the others.
Dr. Bruce mentions in his
History & shews on his plan the Fosse
of the Vallum south south of the Fosse of
the Station, but by minute inspection
it appears that the Fosse of the Station
answered for both, Vallum & Station
