Black Dike Black Dike Mr. Woodman 72 chains South A Stone Wall forming part of
Black Dike Mr. Auburn West of the Boundary between the Parishes
Black Dike Mr Benson Sandyford of Warden and Haltwhistle, it
Black Dike Bruce’s Roman Wall is supposed to occupy the Site of
Black Dike McLauchlans Plan & Memoir of the Roman Wall an Ancient earthen rampart
which probably was the Boundary
"Black Dike, This is an earthwork of unknown antiquity which is supposed to between the Kingdoms of England
have stretched, in a nearly straight line from the Borders & Scotland immediately after the
line from the Borders of Scotland near Peel Fell through Romans evacuated this island;
Northumberland and Durham to the south of Yorkshire. In a plantation on the no traceable remains of this ancient
hill side opposite to where we now are, looking south, the dike exists work has been found in the Parishes
in excellent preservation. The sench[?] or slack of it may be seen hitherto examined, and the name given
from the Wall on the western edge of the plantation, which is to this Modern Wall is the only indication
called the Black Dike Planting. The earth taken out of the Ditch is that such a feature even existed.

conjecture hazarded respecting its origin is that it formed
& Cumbria. The antiquity of the Cutting may be inferred from the
adjacent Parishes of Haltwhistle & Warden, and that it passes
in the North of England by Wm the Conquerer

‘Bruces History of the Roman Wall. Pages 177. & 178.
