ROMAN WALL Roman Wall Bruces History of the Roman Wall 51/2 Chains North A Work of the Ancient Romans
(remains of) Roman Wall Mr. Winter, Mining Agent of Shield on the entering this Parish at the North West
Roman Wall Mr. Thomas Errington Wall. corner and forming the Ph Boundary
from this point for about 7 miles,
the most perfect portion is at the
Knag burn, where it is 5 feet high,
From Knag Burn till its outrance from this Parish 10 links wide with its facing stones
the Ancient Work is principally defined by the perfect, Continuing thence for about
erection of a Modern Wall out of stones a portion of 31/2 Chains, then a modern wall
the stones of the original work: at times however for 5 feet high and 4 links thick is built
instance at sewing Shields no such Wall has been erected on its remains, till it approaches
so that the Anciant site is perfectly traceable having at Sewing Shields Crags; from thence
times part of its internal Rubble still remaining; in it is entirely partially destroyed with the

the Rubble has been removed it is traced by a hollow on the respective Plans, it had
groove left in the ground, so that pass its character in a Fosse on its northern side about

St John Lee in passing through the Park attached where Sewingshield Crags &c. forms a
to the Chesters its line is nearly totally destroyed natural defence, remains both of Fosse &
so that its character becomes Roman Wall (site of) reference to wall have been carefully etched &c.
