(remains of) Staward Peel Mr. Thomas White Harsondale year 1386 at present portions of the
Staward Peel Mackenzie’s History East and West walls are in existence
Staward Peel Hodgsons Histy of Northumberland its situation is peculiarly picturesque
being situated on an eminence nearly
surrounded by the River Allen and
the banks of which is diversified
by fbeautiful woods & awful
Crags. "Mackenzie’s History" mentions
the following, "This Peel, or Castle was granted in 1386
by Edward Duke of York, to the Friars Eremites of
Hexham, to be held by the annual payment of five marks.
It was the residence of John Bacon Esqr. Who raised a large
fortune by mining."
