Methodist Chapel Methodist Chapel Mr Guthrie About 36 chains SE A small neat stone edifice erected by public
(new Connexion) Methodist Chapel Mr Strother of North Newton subscription in 1851 by a body of the Methodists who

(new Connexion) the regulations of the said body divine service is performed
here once on each Sunday throughout the year and
also a Sunday School for the children is held in the
Chapel and well attended
School School Mr Strother About 36 chains S. A good modern stone Building consisting a large
(Endowed) School Mr Wallace of North Newton School room for Boys and Girls annexed to which is
School Mr Guthrie a dwelling for the Master and Mistress. The School is
(Endowed) well attended and Endowed in the following manner
namely. By wills bearing date of 1765 and 1770 Mr
Francis and Mrs Jane Strother left £300 the interest which was to be applied
for the Education of two poor children of every poor family in the township
£200 of which was vested in the funds and £100 in the Turnpike Road from
Buckton Burn to Newcastle. In order to secure the services of good Master
Mr Widdrington with the consent of the township has taken the endowment
into his own hand and undertakes to make good the Master and Ms Sallary
it is also arranged that the poor children pay 2d and others 4d per week none
therefore at present receive gratuitous education at this School Mr Widdrington
has the sole management of the School
