Grindon Grindon Revd W. C. King, Vicar On Sheet A large farm house two stories high
Grindon Mr Ebenezer Black 6.14 having out-offices and a number
Mr Jas A. Black of cottages attached. Also a garden
and a large farm of arable land,
possessed by Messrs E. and J. A. Black;
and is the property of Chas Wm Orde Esqrr.
It is mentioned in "Hutchinson’s History
of Durham 1823, Vol 3, Ps 504 & 505; In the
5th of Queen Mary 1558 the Scots were
defeated at Grindon by forces led by
Sir Thos percy, Sixth Earl of Northumberland
and Sir Henry Percy; the place is marked
by several rude stones or pillars". It is
traditionally supposed that the
conflict above alluded to was fought
in a field called "Battle Moor" situated
a little to the north-east of the present
farm house.
