Elsdonburn Elsdonburn Mr. Alexr Thompson re. Sheet A small farm house & offices, west
Mr. Wm Reed 18. 8 of Heathpool, now occupied as a Shepherd’s
Estate Map house, It is supposed by some that this name is a contraction
of Elve’s or Elfs’ dean i.e.Fairies dean, and that Ell’s Know. is also
a corruption of Elf’s or Elves’ Knowe, and its conjectured the
Glen has been anciently a haunt of Elfs, Elves, or Fairies
but ’tis only conjecture, as the present names are
well authenticated.
Laddie’s Knowe or Laddies Knowe or Mr. A Thompson on Sheet A low hill N. of Elsdonburn house Burn, on one of
Betsy’s Cairn Betsy’s Cairn Mr. Wm Reed 18. 8 the Estate Maps (1711) it is Betsys Cairn, and on the
Estate Map other (1774) it is given as Laddie’s Know.
Ell’s Knowe Ell’s Knowe Mr. Alexr Thompson on Sheet A small conical Know or Knoll South
Mr. A. Black 18. 8 of Elsdonburn House, conjectured as above,
Estate Map. to have been a haunt of the Elves or Fairies.
