CAMPS Camps Mr Jewitt 40 Chains East Two square Camp situated on the summit
(Remains of) Camps Mr Bell of Ray Mill of a prominent elevation on the north
Camps Mr Thornton banks of Ray Burn. The outline of these
Camps Hodgson’s History entrenchments is well defined. Mr Hodgson
in speaking of some objects in the
neighbourhood of these Camps says further west on the point
of the hill where there are remains of a strong earth work
Called Herpath Camp in two compartments with rounded
corners, the one 55 yards each way the other 65 yards by 60
both very perfect 30 years since but now much levelled by the
plough. (No information can be obtained respecting the name Herpath.)
a small Hamlet of that name stood at one time on the opposite side
of the Burn to the above Camps but no trace of it can be seen now.
