attached, they are occupied by
Pitmen, and are the property of
Mr Adam Bell East Ord –
The name is said to have originated
as follows:- There was a man taking
dinner at the back of a fence, when
one of his fellow-workmen, happening
to come that way, was asked to
partake, when he replied that,
this was a very comfortable place,
for, that, there was both meat and
Bield; i.e. Meat and shelter –
Berwickhill Berwickhill Mr.Adam Bell,(proprietor) on Sheet A Coalpit, now being worked by the
Colliery Colliery Mr.James Wilson,(South Ord) 4.13 Corporation of Berwick, and is situ
Mr.John Smith,(Priorhouse) -ated about 10 chains east of "Meat and
& Alexr Lowery Esqr. Berwick Bield". Altho’ that this pit gets this
name, its it is no more "Berwickhill Colliery"
than any other pit in the Townships of Spittal
and Tweedmouth, as each pit in these places
were was known by this name, while being worked, as the
corporation, own the Royalty, of both Townships –
