Castle Castle Mr Morton, Gunner on sheet A fortification on the summit of a rocky
Castle Mr Boak, Officer of Coastguard 12.7 eminence – 108 feet in height, situated at
Castle Mr Wilson, Harbour Master the south end of the Island, and having
a steep road leading to its entrance on the
south side; previous to the invention of cannon
it must have been almost impregnable, as
from the great natural advantages of its
possition, great difficulty would be encounter
-ed in getting sufficiently close to it to do
damage to its walls.
There is scarcely anything historically interesting
in connection with it excepting its capture
by Launcelot and Mark Errington in 1745
for the "Pretender", and its erection is sup-
posed to be coeval with the foundation
of the Monastery in its vicinity and served
the monks as a refuge in cases of invasion.
There are three batteries, the "Queen’s" on the
north, the "Upper" one with flagstaff, on the west,
and "Lower" one on the east, preparations are
now being made for mounting two 68 pounder one 10 inch
swivel gun on the "Upper and Lower" batteries and there is bombproof accommodation for 40 men
It is now occupied as a coastguard station.
