				a wing at the east and south
				ends; the portion of the building
				between those two wings, is
				said to be part of the old
				"Castle of Haggerston" but this
				I consider doubtful as, we find
		that "the old castle was destroyed by fire in 1618, with the exception
		of one of the towers, and which was memorable, as being the place where
		Edward II received the homage of Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, for the
		Earldom of Lincoln in 1311". But this tower was pulled down in 1811,
		and the present west wing, erected on its site. The centre portion
		shown in black on trace, is undoubtedly, much older, than the remainder
		of the building and is constructed with a different kind of stone,
		it being a white freestone, and the outer surface appears to have
		been redressed to make it harmonize with the new work –
		This Castle, and Estate, has been the property of Haggerston family
		from time immemorial until a few years ago, when it was purchased
		by the present proprietor Capn Leyland
