Ancroft Ancroft Whellan’s Directory on Sheets A small village situated
Ancroft Mr George Smith 7.9 & on the turnpike road, leading
Ancroft Revd Wm Hewitt, Ancroft 7.13 from Berwick, to Wooler &c
and about 6 miles from the
former. It would appear to have
been at one time of considerable
importance, as there are still
to be seen the sites of many
houses, that have been removed.
It is now reduced to a few Cottages,
there are in it an ancient
church, Parsonage, National
School, small Public house
and Postoffice. Letters arrive
from Berwick at 1 P.m.
