Remains of an Abbey Abbey Wright’s History of Hexham On the West of The Abbey of which the present Remains
Abbey Mr Joseph Fairless St Andrews Ch. formed a part was erected by Thos
Abbey Plan of the Manor Archbishop of York, & a prior of regular
Abbey Hutchinson’s View of Northumberland Canons of St Austin constituted by him in the
year 1112-The best preserved portion
Chapter House Chapter House of the Remains are those on which the new
edifice is erected. The old walls and
Cloisters Cloisters Vaulted roofs of the former support to a
considerable extent the 2nd floor of the
Refectory Refectory latter and the rooms underneath are
used by the inhabitants as Kitchens
Site of the Old School Old School cellars &c This was the Refectory. The
portion at the South end of the transept
Remains of the Abbey Wall Abbey Wall of the church, now a roofless ruin, was
the Chapter House. The Cloisters lay
between St Andrews Church and the new
building & the Old School stood at
the East end of the Choir & was only
removed last Year. The Abbey Wall
extends in a southerly direction from the
corner
