Castle Banks Castle Banks Wm Smith Esq 11 1/2 Chains East An eminence near the
Castle Banks McKenzie’s History of the Town East end of the Village
Castle Banks Whellan’s Directory Hall. of Haltwhistle on the
summit of which is
the remains of an
ancient camp
which may account for the
name "Castle"
(This is quite a natural feature)
Camp Camp Wm Smith Esq 11 1/2 Chains The remains of a Camp, situated on
(Remains of) Camp Robert Pattinson Esq East of the the Castle Banks, it was defeneded by
Camp Mr John Pattison Town Hall a breastwork of earth on three sides
viz the North, East and West ones
and by a large natural slope on the
South, which slope is quite accessible
not as McKenzie says "Inaccessible"
The rampart or breastwork is in a
good state of preservation.
The opinion of the greater part
of my informants are that it is
the remains of a British Camp.
It commands an interesting view
of part of the vale of the South
Tyne to the East as far as Haydon
Bridge & to the West for about
4 or 5 miles, the views North and
South are limited, owing to the
abrupt manner in which Hills
rise.
