(Roman Station) Bremenium } Roman Station of Northumberland Hillock Known as Bremenium was the ne plus
Bremenium } McLauchlans Memoir of Watling ultra of our wish in this part of Northumberland.
Street It was esteemed the strongest Station
the Romans had in the north, and
was the Capital or chief fortress of the Otadini. Many coins, Altars, and other Remains
have been found at this Station, especially the Coins of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus.
An altar was found here now in the possession of the Revd. Dr. Sharp inscribed
by a cohort of Varduli to the emperor Caracalla. An altar now preserved
in Elsdon Church was found here. This Station is defended by a wall of ashler
work Seven feet in thickness with motes and treble ramparts as outworks which is
now obliterated on the West and part of the East sides. This Station takes its
name of Bremenium from being Castrum in rupe which is the true description of its Site
it being Situated on the brow of a Steep & rocky hill Commanding the pass of
Redesdale. On every hand the prospect is horrible except the narrow vally watered
by the Rede. The remains of the North, South, West Gates are Still visible together with a
part of the West wall. The form of this Station is nearly a Square."
