North Charlton Joseph Hill about 6 miles north by west of
North Charlton Revd. Chas Thorp, Vicar Alnwick – The houses, in general
of Ellingham are, small Cottages, of an inferior
description, there are in it
two farmhouses, an Inn, and
one or two Small Grocers’ shops.
It would appear, to have been
at one time of Some importance
And could boast of its Market
(the Ancient Cross, of which
Still remains) A Strong Castle
This is doubtful {the Site of which, is still point
See remark in {-ed out by the inhabitants
Page 35 – {And Also, the site of its church
{is still to be found here –
It is Said to have been a Market
town before Alnwick was
cre one, And that it contained
nine Streets, but it is now a
miserable looking village –
