Bowchester Bowchester Mr James Short On Sheet This name applies to a field
Mr William Short 19.8 & a little east of Humbleton
Estate Map 19.4 Buildings, and adjoining Low
Humbleton. It is remarkable as
being the field in which a number
of Human Skeleton, Horses bones &c
have been found from time to time
particularly in the year 1853 when
four Human Skeletons were found
enclosed in Stone coffins or rather covered
with large Sandstone flags- The Skeletons
appeared to have been doubled up neck and feet
together-but on exposure to the air
they crumbled into dust-
Gallowlaw Hill Gallowlaw Hill Mr James Short On Sheet A low Knoll on the roadside about 1/2
Mr William Short 19.8 a mile from Wooler on the way to
Mr Robert Brown Low Humbleton, remarkable like the
above field for human remains at
different periods having been found in
turning up the soil – so plentyful
are they, that they are turned up by the
plough almost every year. Skulls
bones &c &c from the name it is inferred
this has been a place where criminals
were wont to be executed, a golden Cross was
found here between 1820 & 1830, date uncertain-
