site of a Battle Fought AD 1370 site of a Battle fought A.b. 1370 Mr Davidson 9.13 a field close to the site of the
Mr Dove old walls of Wark Castle and is considered
merely a farm name for the enclosure
its vicinity to the castle ruins is the
Cause of it being so named
In 1370 Sir John Lilburn was defeated at this place by
the Scots
Gallows Hill Gallows Hill Revd F Thompson On Sheet A prominent green knoll about
Mr Dove 9.13 1/2 a mile westward from Wark Village
Mr Davidson and the spot in which the sentence
of Criminals was carried into
execution, hence the name of Gallow
Hill.
Dean Burn Dean Burn Mr Davidson On Sheet A small Burn that flows from
Engraved map of Parish 9.13 a pond near Shidlaw and runs at flows past
Mr Dove the south side of Gallow Hill until
it enters in the flat ground, after
which it loses this name and
takes the name of "The Goat"
