Tomb Tomb Mr Leighton 8 chains North The sepulchre of Mrs Babington
Tomb Sir Charles Monck of Low Hall was hewn out of rock, at the
Tomb Hodgson’s Northumberland west end of the village of Harnham
She was excommunicated for which reason the
Vicar of Bolam would not allow her to be buried at the
Church. There are no remains now in the Tomb, the
lead coffin was broken & stolen from it but the
following inscriptions the first cut on stone & 2nd
painted on a board still remains within it.
Here lieth the body of Madam Babington who
was laid on this sepulcher the 9 Sept 1670.
My time is past as you may see,
I viewed the dead as you do me,
or long you’ll lie as low as I,
And some will look at thee.
2nd
In hopes of future bliss contented here I lie
Though I would have been pleased to live, yet was not displeased to die,
For life hath its comforts and its sorrows too,
For which to the Lord of Heaven our most grateful thanks are due
Where nature tells us we cannot be blest;
If it was otherwise our hopes here would rest,
Where nature tells us we cannot be blest;
How far my hopes are vain or founded well
God only knows but the last day will tell.
