Bellingham Francis Charlton Esqr North Tyne, the Town is well buildt of good
stone, the old thatched houses are fast disappearing
it consists of numerous shops three inns
a Beer House Post office, Union Work House
Police station, mechanics shops and a
number of private dwellings. The Town form[erly]
belonged to the ancient family of De Bellingham
who had a castle here it is now the property
of several free holders, the Duke of Northumberland
is lord of the manor, No Roman remains have
been discovered here nor is there any site of
Bridge or track of Roman Road leading [to]
it from any direction hence it is obvious
that Bellingham never was a Roman

in a private house, also a County court for
the recovery of debts under £50 is here held
monthly also four cattle fairs and two
for the hiring of servants are annually
held here
