Belford Mr. James Robertson 16.5 situated in a vale, within about two miles
Belford Mr. George McDonald 16.6 of the sea, fifteen from Berwick, nine
16.9 & from Wooler, and fifteen from Alnwick.
16.10 It may be said to consist principally of
two streets, and the buildings in general
are neat (many of which have been erected
on leases for three lives), but the chief
ornaments to the town is are Belford Hall,
St. Mary’s Church, and a neat stone cross,
which adorns the Market Place. There is
an excellent Inn, and six other public
houses, and Beershops; a Post Office, Gas
works, Brewery, two dissenting places of
worship, two schools, and several Draper’s
and other shops. The market is held
on Wednesdays, and has become almost
obsolete, its only support being the sale
of Corn, which is sold by sample.
