the only dwelling upon it. For watching
the Oysterbed in the vicinity, game &c
about the middle of the island, on the
East side, there is a house in which a
small lifeboat is kept, for launching
in an emergency when the Holy Island
lifeboat cannot put off.
At the north end of the island are
two beacons composed of stone and brick,
the east one 77 feet high, and the other
124 feet, erected by the Trinity house, Newcastle,
which derives ‘Anchorage and Beaconage’ dues
from vessels entering Holy Island Harbour.

12.6 at the N W end of Old Law, which, on approach-
ing from the South makes the actual distance to Holy
Island appear much shorter.
