Monkhouse Revd. Mr Orde to "Bamburgh", one of which, is, a
Monk’s House Parish Names List Page 53 private dwelling, and the other,
a Public house, having stables,
other, small offices, and small
garden attached.
Tradition says, that, the
Monks of St Cuthbert, erected
a Hut or shelter, here, that,
when they came to the main-
land, from their Monastery
on the Farne Islands, in which
they could remain in it during
stormy weather, and when it
was unsafe, to return, in their
Boat to the Island, (hence the name)
It is the property of the Dean &
Chapter of Durham Cathedral.
