the Summer Months, by the
Upper, and Middle Classes &c.
It Comprises three good Inns,
a Post Office, two Schools
(one of them an Infant School),
two Public Washhouses, a
few small grocers’ shops –
the remainder, being neat
Cottages all having gardens
attached.
This was at one time, a
place of Some importance, as
+ There was in it Several Religious houses, one of the it sent two members to par
Order of St. Augustine, founded by King Henry I. in AD. -liament, but even the Market
1137, a College, an Hospital, dedicated to St. has long been disused, +
May Magdalen And a house for Dominicans,
but the Site of none, can be ascertained excepting the former, a portion of the walls
of which are still standing, and Known as the "Friary". It is the property of the Trus
-tees of the Late Lord Crewe.
