Roman Road the "Cat Law" a well known eminence on the aforesaid
Common, proceeding in the last named direction about 150
yards from the boundary of Holystone Common, it intersects the
Drove Road leading between Elsdon and Harbottle, for about 40
yards on the East side and 30 on the West side of the intersection evident
traces exist, Immediately North of "Cat Law" the footpath leading
between North Yardhope (a farmhouse) and Holystone joins the an-
cient R. Road, at this particular point, the South Side of the
road is raised or faced with rough stones this was necessary owing
to the slope towards the South (there being an angle of about 30 [degrees])
from the last mentioned portion, it is with a few exceptions in
a good state of preservation, and continues so, until it reaches
a point about 253 yards South of "Rob Roy’s Cave" which is situated
in the well known ravine called "Lanternside Cleugh" from the
last well known points the Site turns rather abruptly to the
Northward, looking at the nature of the ground it must have
crossed the North side of "Cocklaw Bush" (a hill) continuing in
the same route passes about 3 yards North of the far famed
"Lady’s Well" (about 1/8 mile from Holystone) persuing the
last mentioned direction, crosses Sharperton Common and
the River Coquet, until it cuts the Township Road
about 288 yards north of Sharperton Edge (a farmhouse)
from this point until it reaches "Foxton Burn" the
remains are quite visible. from Foxton Burn to where
it enters the Parish of Rothbury at Ewe Hill, the
traces are just faint, the whole has been carefully
inserted on the various plans.
