ROMAN ROAD Watling Street Mr. Thompson (Bygate Hall) Ralph’s Walls entering this parish a short distance
(Site of) Watling Street Mr. George Telford (Blindburn) West of the Source of "Long Sike". it then
(Watling Street) runs in a South easterly direction, passing
a little to the east of Green Hartley
(a small hill) Continuing in the same direction
it passes on the East side of Chew Green
and Ad Fines Camps, crossing the
River Coquet about 276 Yards from the
latter. After leaving the River Coquet it
continues in the above direction up the face
of a steep eminence, this steep or hilly
portion of the road is well known as
"Gammel’s Path". from the last named
place it inclines a little more to the
East passing the Outer Golden Pot,
at a distance of about 140 Yards
South East of the Outer Golden Pot
the Road crosses the boundary and
enters the parish of Elsdon.
From near the source of the "Long Sike the
traces of this ancient Road are quite
visible, for rather more than 500 yards, coming
near Chew Green the traces become quite
faint and scarcely discernable, between Chew
Green (passing the Ad Fines Camps) and the
River Coquet it is nearly obliterated.
