Barbican F Holland Esqr of Pottergate Tower which is the principal entrance to Alnwick Castle
Barbican William Dixon Esqr it was formerly a place of very great strength being
defended by a strong Gate. Portcullis and Draw Bridge
and also embattled Towers. The open space within this
BuildingÓ¿ is called the Outer Ward Midway between
this Gateway and the Abbots and Clock Towers are two
small Turrets now called Garrets which served as
abutments to the walls from which they project; they
were also intended to enfilade the walls from Tower to
Tower. Ó¿ That is the portion of ground between
this gateway and the castle where the
name is written on the plan and
shaded with green as ornamental ground
