St Leonard’s Nunnery Chamber’s Caledonia as having existed in the 13th Century
(Site of) and suffered considerably during
the wars of the Edwards – especially
the III Edward, who, during the seige
of Berwick, nearly ruined it – but his
subsequent victory of Halidon Hill
Caused him to make an annual grant
of £20 a year in support of an altar
dedicated to St Margaret upon wh[ose]
eve the above battle was fought, nothing
is heard of this building till the 15th Cent[ury]
when it, (like many other religious & ch[urch]
establishments) were destroyed by the [ruthless]
Henry VIII. They formed part of the or[der]
of Cistercians
Mr. Lumbsden has ploughed over the [site]
for the past 30 years – and the pieces of [ca???]
stones & old walls he came in contact with [are]
innumerable, – several skeletons and a piece [of]
stained glass where found some years ag[o]
and the ground to this day is well known [as]
the – Nunlees- a very significant fact.
