Northumberland Directory precipice on the north bank of the River Till
and seen from all parts of the surrounding
Twizell – Parish Name List P. 29 country at a great distance, the erection of
Twizell Castle – Grases Antiquities of this Mansion was commenced about 74
Northumberland Vol.IV Page 141 years ago and was intended as a redidence
for the Blake Family, owing to some cause it
has never been completed, the lower part of
the building has been made habitable for a
few families of labourers employed on
the estate.

Note to Marmion 9.4 to the north side of the Till about
Northumberland Directory 1/4 of a mile eastward from Twizell Castle
the spring falls into a basin which is
stated to have been built with stonework
and used for medicinal purposes. It
is now choked with rubbish and only
presents the appearance of an ordinary
spring.*
Cat Well Cat Well Captn Blake On sheet A small spring well near Twizell Castle
Stephen Smith 9.4 and its water is used by the residents
William Scott therein, it is uncertain how the
name originated.
*The tradition is that St. Helen drank out of this well
It is remarkable only for the Purity & Coldness
of its water
